Visitors:
We thank all today's observers for their efforts and those interested in
the ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top
level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers
only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19
safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
There was frost on the tower early morning, but the temperature gradually
increased throughout the day to 11c. The wind remained from the south
slight to moderate all day. Cloud cover varied during the day, but it was
clearer in the afternoon. Starting misty, visibility quickly improved.
Raptor Observations:
Most raptors were seen around midday, with Turkey Vultures (222) again
topping the bill, followed by Red-tailed Hawks (102). Sharp-shinned Hawks
(12) barely reached double figures. There were highlights; a young male
Peregrine Falcon was brought to the tower for release, 2 merlins whipped
past the tower and a distant Golden Eagle was seen at 13.17 (EST). Majority
of sightings were distant north east of the marsh.
Non-raptor Observations:
A large number of Starlings (26,100) passed the tower heading west. Tree
swallows (300) are still hawking over the marsh. Blackbird numbers were
lower and songbirds are only present in low numbers. Duck numbers continue
to increase with more Ring-necked Ducks (1050) seen on the marsh. Waterbird
numbers are low with most Double-crested Cormorants (13) seeming to have
left. Boneparte's Gull (54) numbers are increasing.

Predictions:
Tomorrow's forecast is very similar to today's weather, so hopefully we
will have similar raptor numbers.
