Public Access to Gull Island, a popular birding location at Presqu'ile Provincial Park starts on Friday Sept. 11th. As on previous years the island can be accessed by wading along a submerged gravel bar. This year the wade is about 230metres with water being at most two feet deep in calm water. Lake seiche can add several inches to the depth during a visit. As always the current can be noticeable in either direction, even without waves and crossing in wavy conditions is not recommended. Looking at the bottom while water moves over it can cause disorientation in some people, so do be careful.
The pond on the island itself is dry with a short green growth covering it and some shorebirds may still forage in it.
Today shorebirds on the island included - Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Sanderling, Knot (1), Ruddy Turnstone, Stilt Sandpiper (1), Dunlin (1), and Whimbrel (1). These birds were all seen from the mainland at Owen Pt as well today.
Cheers
David
