PUPsters might be interested in following the Voyage of Egret, a Nordhavn 46 that's
just begun a 16-month journey from Gibraltar to New Zealand by way of Brazil,
Argentina, Chile including the canals, and Cape Horn, to name a few of their
planned stops.
My friends Scott and Mary Flanders, who took part in the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally
aboard Egret, have set out on this 20,000 NM course adventure. They spent a year-
and-a-half researching the project and have been eager to get out and experience
this journey of a lifetime. "This trip is about taking a modern comfortable power boat
from the Mediterranean to New Zealand via Cape Horn, traveling in as much comfort
as possible and enjoying all that the voyage has to offer. We are going to see places
few people ever get to see," Scott said.
The trip will be covered on Nordhavn's website with weekly log updates from the
Flanderses en route, with tracking of Egret on its course and photographs
documenting the adventure. News of the trip has already been reported in several
boating magazines with stories lined up in more publications in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Adds Scott: "I hope to encourage people to head offshore and enjoy some of the things
that we b who do go offshore in our boat b get to see and do."
Scott and Mary have spent the past two years enjoying the Med, cruising from Gibraltar
to Turkey and back again. They departed Gibraltar Sept. 16 for the 708-mile passage
to Las Palmas, in the Canaries, then crossed to la Gomera, the tiny island from whence
Columbus departed on his three voyages of discovery including the BIG one. Egret
departed San Sebastian, La Gomera, Sept. 30, for Bahia de Salvador, Brazil, a distance
of 2,779 NM. A week into the trip, they report that the trip is proceeding nicely.
