Total observation time: 7.25 hours

Official Counter: Claude Radley

Observers:        Bob Hall-Brooks, Bob Pettit, Dan Lumm, Donald Pye,
Rayfield Pye, none

Visitors:
Many for first festival day of first festival weekend. Many new birders
enjoyed the hawk flight and learned about shrugging sharpies. Thank you
all for coming.

Weather:
Wind from SE mostly 0-5 mph. Hot, sunny, blue sky.

Raptor Observations:
General movement of sharpies (mostly)  and kestrels. Birds easy to see with
young eyes but lost in the burning blue sky. SS in groups of 2 or more. One
of 6 birds. Testing our resolve to find and identify them. SE winds usually
push the line of flight northward. We were grateful for what we saw.

Non-raptor Observations:
Several species of 'shore birds' had our attention. C. Snipe, L.
Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Whimbrel (perhaps a first for sight in
fall).
Soras are very vocal. A drag-line survey would surly give us a good idea
of their numbers. Various estimates from 25-40 in earshot north of tower.
Few RT Hummers. A few swallows, a swift, kingfisher, goldfinch, green
heron, cedar waxwing, red-breasted nuthatch.

Predictions:
Generally the same. Bring a hat, sunscreen, extra water, Enjoy a sunny day
with migrating raptors and friendly observers. Many activities of kids and
adults alike.

This was my first day back to count hawks and it felt good! This day is
usually split between Bob Hall-Brooks and Bob Pettit. Claude Radley
stepped up and ran the show (daily coordinator) for us and we ID and wrote
the numbers. Thanks Claude.
