Call for Artists
Global Block Party: Call for Banner Artwork at Othello Square Building

Introduction:
The Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic (Seattle Children’s Hospital) is seeking up to five artists to submit images of artworks that can be translated and fabricated onto exterior banners.

About the Project:
The Project provides neighborhood housing (Orenda at Othello Square) on floors 3-7 and floors 1-2 will include the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic and Tiny Tots. This community-oriented project seeks to help minimize displacement in the Othello neighborhood by providing workforce housing. (Workforce housing is housing that is affordable to workers and close to their jobs. It is rental housing, that can be reasonably afforded by a moderate to middle income, critical workforce and located in acceptable proximity to workforce centers.)

OBCC will provide community and family pediatric oriented health services. It will be an inviting and friendly place where neighbors can find the support, education, and care they need.

Tiny Tots, the early learning childcare facility plans to provide care for infants to preschool aged children and will be a convenient and safe place for families living in the building, working in the clinic, or living in the Othello neighborhood.

About Othello Square:
Starting as a grassroots movement, community members in Othello banded together to influence the future of their neighborhood. Othello Square (originally named Southeast Economic Opportunity Center) is their cumulative vision for the evolution of Othello and includes four properties with a shared open space plaza. Through the master planning process, stakeholders worked together to establish the following mission statement:

“The Campus is designed to represent the diverse and international nature of South  Seattle, providing a place that serves the whole community with homes, educational and business development opportunities, family-wage jobs, health care, social services support, and a variety of small enterprises at which to shop, eat and play.”

Scope of Work:
The artist will submit images of existing 2D artworks that relate to the theme Global Block Party that can be translated into large-scale banners that will be on the exterior of the Building.  The theme Global Block Party refers to the goals determined by the Odessa Brown Children’s clinic art committee.

Theme: Global Block Party
The Othello neighborhood is the most culturally and ethnically diverse in the City of Seattle. Othello represents home to over 26 different ethnicities, is represented by intergenerational families and a diverse workforce. Together, these diverse communities and cultures work and play together, raise their children together, and protect each other. This togetherness is best represented by the idea of a Block Party, a neighborhood gathering that welcomes everyone as they are, to come and celebrate the community as a whole. We are asking artists to submit images that relay idea of cross-cultural celebration, community togetherness and joy.

The artist will submit images of existing 2D artworks that relate to the themes for the project:
·    Unity
·    Equity
·    Home
·    Dream
·    Nest
·    Belonging
·    Strength
·    Wellness
·    Ownership
·    Family
The images will need to be able to be translated into large-scale (approximately 27’ tall) banners that will be on the exterior of the  building along S. Othello Street.  Additionally, a large mural (depicted above) has been finalized for the exterior of the building, along with custom perforated metal panels at the Movement Room on the south (see rendering below). It is important the banners are cohesive with the existing art designed for the building.
