Good afternoon. Those of you who work with small municipalities - do you
attend all monthly meetings? If so - if you are comfortable sharing - do
you charge a flat rate or your contract hourly rate?
One of my municipalities has, as a cost-saving measure, advised they do not
want me to come to the regular meetings unless I'm specifically asked to do
so. I understand and respect the financial concerns, but the fact that I
will be out of the loop on the discussions and general goings-on makes me
uncomfortable.
I'd appreciate any insight, advice, or general thoughts.
Thanks
Kim Spady
It is hard to represent a small town if you are not there. To much risk of mistakes from everything to open meeting act violations to decisions being made without proper legal input.
As to fees, you might consider doing it on a flat rate for the meetings and hourly for all other representation.

I represent two small towns and agree with Larry on both attendance and
flat rating. Keeping your client within the framework of the Open
Meeting Act on a real-time basis is reason enough to attend. An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure. As for me, I flat rate all meetings,
but only attend regular meetings as a matter of course. Special meetings
only on request.
