I am so confused as to what is the best anchor. A friend recommended the rocna, another recommended the CQR, etc. Can any one cut through this?

We are cruising powerboat sailors and hang around South West Florida. We currently have a CQR on the boat (came with the boat) however, we are having a tough time getting the thing to grab. We have an all chain rode and I usually pay out 6:1.

Whatever works best for you!

I'd throw SuperMax into the mix. It's our personal favorite, certainly
much better under more varied conditions than either the CQR or Danforth
(both of which we carry and have used in the distant past.

A major factor getting an anchor to "hold" is technique. Perhaps that's
the issue you're having with your CQR anchor.

Ron - Among boaters, this subject turns into a can of worms, but I'll bite
having just gone through the same. My research came down to two options:
Sarca Excel or Manson Supreme. We went with the Excel, but at the added cost
of shipping from Australia; felt it was worth it in the long run.

Now I'll go into hiding for a bit...

Snip:",,,I am so confused as to what is the best anchor. A friend

Hello Ron,
This is strictly anecdotal.  Independent tests vary but reveal that the
Rocna is a strong performer. We migrated to this scoop style anchor and are
very pleased.  We have a 33kg Rocna on an all 3/8s" chain rode(not one of
the notorious Chinese models) as the primary and an Fortress FX-37 for
secondary pea soup muck.  Since using the Rocna we have not had to use the
Fortress. The Rocna ranked very high in many tests. We have found it to be
very, very much better than our former 55 Delta anchor.  I made the switch
after doing our first loop travelling and anchoring with Fred and Linda on
"Young America".  Watching how easily and securely Fred set their Rocna
while I was still fishing around to get the Delta set.  Now after 20,000
miles cruising and anchoring with the Rocna we are still very pleased.  It
has never dragged and always set quickly (now I'm cursed!)  It is our
sleeping pill.  I hear the Supermax, Manson are good as well as the crazy
expensive spade.  I'm sure your post will ignite another roundhouse of
discussion.  Hope to see you guys sometime when moving south from St Pete in
late spring.

Ok to all posters

What about the Manson Boss
I just became aware of it at the Miami show.  It stows in a normal slotted pulpit and purports to be even better than the Supreme.  It has a Huge shovel shaped pan which will cover both sides of a double slotted pulpit but I bet it holds solidly.

Any experiences.  I thought I would give it a try from west marine and see how it fits my Krogen.

Looks like a viable hoop-less design. Are there any tests out there?
