Gentle Wind arrived Tuesday afternoon in Honolulu, Hawaii, after
running from one poor anchorage to another! We had been anchored
in Sugar Beach (near Kihei, Maui, where some kind soul who had
been reading our web log took our photo). But a nasty northerly
wind kicked up making the anchorage untenable. We ran north to
the beach in order to retrieve the dinghy, then west towards Manele
Bay on Lanai. This was a nice protected bay, unfortunately it was
too small to accomodate us and the other boat already there, so we
continued on to Kaumalapau Harbor (also on Lanai) for the night.
Kaumalapau was also pretty small, but it was large enough for us,
and it was getting too dark to look for anything better. We spent
the night hoping that the barge wouldn't come in until we had left -
and it didn't.
So, on Tuesday morning we crossed the channel from western Lanai to
Honolulu and we're now moored at the Ke'ehi Lagoon Harbor, just east
of the Honolulu airport. The guide book warns of the constant airplane
noise, but it really isn't that bad. We'll be spending a week here,
taking care of some boat repairs (all minor), before we head south to
Christmas Island (Kiritimati, in Kiribati). After that, we'll
probably skip the easterly trip to the Marquesas to avoid bashing into
the strong southeast trades; instead we'll probably head straight for
the Tuamotus and Rangiroa.
Paul:
Have you investigated Ko Olina on the western side
of Oahu? It's pricey, however you may prefer it
as it is quieter there.

Well, no, I hadn't thought of Ko Olina. We wanted to be
close to Honolulu for shopping (parts) access. Ala Wai
would've been great except TransPac is in town so they
are full. Ke'ehi had room, and it really isn't all that
bad, noise-wise.
