We completed the loop in 2011 and did very little advance planning. While we discovered some neat places and had great adventures this way, on occasion we found ourselves cruising past interesting spots because we couldn't figure out how to stop and visit them in a timely fashion (find a marina, figure out local transportation & dog sitting).
One place comes to mind: the Culinary Institute on the Hudson - didn't know they were there until we passed them.
We head out again in April, up the east coast, the Rideau, Champlain, Chesapeake. While we are not asking for specific logistical support, what places have you found interesting along the way that needed some extra planning and organizing. (either there were no marinas closeby, or it required a car rental)
