Moving Location of City Hall

One of my municipalities has recently purchased a new building to be able to move City Hall into. I’m wanting to see if there are any rules or best practices on how to officially notify the public of this. Essentially, the only change should be the physical location of City Hall. The mailing address has been PO Box and the phone numbers should also stay the same.

If anyone has experience in this, I’d appreciate any insight on “must do” items (ordinances, resolutions, etc) or good ideas (newspaper ads and other similar announcements). It is already well known across the municipality that the change will be coming, I just want to make sure that we cover all of our bases.

Thanks,

You will need to file a new notice of city council meetings with city clerk under open meeting act.  I think a notice in newspaper would be sufficient to advertise the new location.

Jared,

I had a municipality build a new Town Hall a few years ago.  I did not find any "notice" requirements other than using the new address on meeting notices.  We also notified the County Clerk, but I think all other changes were on an ad hoc basis.  It is a very small town and they only moved to an adjacent lot, so it was not difficult as a practical matter.  If you are worried, I would inform whatever news media is around with a press release (free media is great, but you could also publish a notice if you are really concerned).

Good Luck!
