West Marine Passagemaking Under Power Symposium, a serious seminar for
people serious about long-range cruising in trawlers, will take place
November 2-3 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in conjunction with the 43rd
annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
The symposium is an intense educational experience on all vital aspects of
seamanship offshore in trawlers, including medical advice and preparation,
emergency equipment and procedures, and vital systems of the vessel.
The symposium will be held at Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort overlooking
Bahia Mar Yachting Center where all leading makes of trawlers will be on
display in the show.
Circumnavigator Bruce Kessler will be lead presenter while Chuck Hawley of
West Marine will serve as moderator. They will be supported by special
presenters in areas such as emergency medicine, weather forecasting, diesel
engines, and issues of concern to women.

Bruce has cruised from the Pacific Northwest to the Canadian Maritimes with
Spirit of Zopilote, launched in 1997 as a successor to the famed Zopilote, the
trawler yacht with which he and his wife, Joan, circumnavigated the world in
1990-93.
Chuck is Vice President of Product Development at West Marine and author of
many of the West Advisors in the West Marine Master Catalog. He has crossed
the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean under sail and crewed on a Nordhavn 57
between Seattle and San Francisco.
Special presenters will include:
-- Jim Leishman, co-author of the latest edition of Voyaging Under Power, a
principal in Pacific Asian Enterprises, and Project Director for the
successful Nordhavn 40 circumnavigation.
-- Bud LeMieux, builder of circumnavigators Zopilote and Starship and many
other large passagemakers, Vice President of Northern Marine.
-- Milt Baker, founder of Bluewater Books & Charts, who has crossed the
Atlantic aboard Bruce Kessler's Zopilote and cruised more than 100,000
miles aboard small yachts.
-- Dolph and Bev McCranie, passagemakers with The Right Whale, a Krogen 48
Whaleback.
-- Dick Gee, Vice President of Engineering, Alaska Diesel Electric, maker
of Northern Lights and Lugger.
-- Pam Wall, Associate of the Ft. Lauderdale West Marine Store , a
circumnavigator under sail.
-- Lee Chesneau, Weather forcaster of NOAA's Marine Prediction Center.
-- Stephen Seaton, designer of Zopilote and other bluewater voyagers.
-- Sean Dooley of Marine Medical International.
-- Charlie Corbett of Billy The Eagle, Hull #3 in the Krogen 58 series.
