I'm looking at purchasing a boat in the Cleveland/Detroit area and it may
have a height problem at 24'. Can anyone point me to a site or answer if
there are any bridges with lower limits than 24'.
Thanks in advance to all,
Michael Liddle
Boatless for the moment but looking

No problem on great lakes. Erie canal west end a problem. Chicago river also a problem.

Our trawler has a mast height of 26 ft. We just came down the Chicago River,
Illinois, Miss River and Ohio River. Now on Barkely Lake.
If you come down the Chicago River into the Illinois River, once you get
past Joliet, you will have no trouble raising the mast. You will regularly
see tugboats whose height is about 40 ft. We put our mast up in Ottawa
Illinois on the Illinois River.

Yes you have a very real problem.  Your only exit from the great lakes is via the Welland Canal and out the St Lawrence and around Gaspe to the Atlantic.  You must get down to about 20' to get to the Hudson River. 19.1' to be able to reliably get thru to the Illinois River and down to the gulf.  Get a guide e.g. Skipper Bob's for a better education.

You will have a problem on the East end of the Erie too.  The West end (
Tonawawanda to Cayuge Junction is 15.5', from there on to Three Rivers
Junction is 19' and East of there including the Oswego Canal is 21'...all
the way to Waterford.  It might be chancy at that if there is flooding
around lock 21 and Rome at the bridge for Rt 26/ 365 .

I would certainly be looking at lowering/removing equipment/arches/etc. to
get to that magic 19' if attempting the Mississippi route.  If you can get
to 20' then the Welland to Oswego to Waterford on the Erie is doable.
