The Foss Waterway Seaport has a few spots still open for a Free teacher workshop available to formal classroom and home school teachers

“What Happening in our Local Watershed” Workshop

Dates: June 26 - 27, 2013

Times: 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Cost: FREE

Register: Call Vickie – 253.272.2750 x 100

This FREE workshop will focus on "hands-on" learning and curriculum integration on topics such as ocean acidification, use of real-time data, underwater sounds, ROV's (Remote Operated Vehicles), plankton, marine debris, local marine food webs (based around the Seaport’s instructional touch tanks) and microplastics.

Participants will experience 1/2 day of learning aboard a research vessel My Girl with presentations from Ocean Inquiry Project using their CTD (abbreviated name for an instrument package that includes sensors for measuring the Conductivity, Temperature and Depth of seawater). Teachers will work with scientists to collect and analyze data. This will offer teachers an opportunity to discuss latest finding in water quality.

Other presenter will offer teachers information on benthic macroinvertebrates (collect them, view them and learn what they tell us about the health of our watershed), current microplastic studies (doing a hands-on beach collection), and so much more.  Teachers will spend half a day building ROV’s, which they can test off the Seaport’s docks. (Sorry, teacher cannot keep the ROV’s built, but after this activity teachers will know how to build one of your own.)

Teachers will participate in a “lesson swap” allowing teachers to teach teacher their favorite watershed lesson. The WA Dept. of Ecology will share information about their monitoring programs.

Qualifying classroom teachers will be eligible to participate in a drawing where the Seaport will award one boat-based education program for a class of up to 28 students and their teacher + bus transportation. The trip must be  taken in September or October 2013.
