Visitors:
We appreciate all the interest in the tower and the hawk watch but remind
everyone that the tower remains closed to members of the public and has a
three-person limit reserved for the Hawk Counters. Thank you to all who are
respecting these precautions. Be safe everyone!
Weather:
Overcast all day with very gentle wind from the north-west. Rain and hail
late afternoon, temperature around 6c all day.
Raptor Observations:
Slow day due to no sun and little wind making thermal migration difficult.
Buteos again low and often perching. However, highlight of the day was a
Rough-legged Hawk in the early afternoon. Low numbers of Red-tailed (31),
Red-shouldered (10) and Sharp-shinned Hawks (4). There was a small Turkey
Vulture (154) migration in the middle of the day. An early surprise was a
Peregrine low over the Marsh.
Non-raptor Observations:
Quite a varied day with good numbers of blackbirds; Red-Winged 1180 and
Rusty 530. It was great to see and hear lots of Rusty Blackbirds resting in
the trees around the tower. Good variety of winter finches, but no Evening
Grosbeaks seen today. A single Eastern Bluebird perched and a good number
of American Robins (78) were seen. Cedar waxwings made a comeback (102).
As ever the marsh was full of waterfowl, but also the lake was interesting
with Redhead, Greater Scaup and Ruddy Duck seen. A full list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S75502936
Predictions:
Tomorrow should bring brighter conditions with partial cloud cover. A fresh
wind from the south-west may give Turkey Vultures and buteos lift and any
sun may help thermals to form. So hopefully we should see more migration
tomorrow than today.
