Hi All

I love Google Earth.

I know that many of us use this (or similar applications) to check-out
ports/harbours/anchorages, points of interest along a planned route etc.

We know that this should not be used for navigation and that the photographs
may not be (and probably are not) current.

In the August Google Earth newsletter I noticed that the coverage of the
area where I live had been upgraded and on looking at this was pleased to
see that the coverage was indeed much higher resolution. But then on closer
inspection I noticed that some features were not right. Trees were missing -
pathways around the fields not taking the correct route - crops showing that
had not been recently grown.

All in all we estimate that the photographs could NOT have been taken LATER
THAN 2005!
At least 5 years old and possibly 6 years old.

Upgraded (resolution) but NOT updated.

The implications of this for marine use are obvious.

Take care out there.

GE coverage isn't as good overseas as it is in the US, for france probably
something to do with IGN imagery not being as detailed or recent.

what happened to that system the french launched a couple of years ago that
was supposed to be vastly superior to GE?  :)

The latest version of GE shows you the imagery date in the bottom left
corner and includes a History slider so you can go back in time for some
locations.

that said, here in the US, GE is a good tool to plan trips, since you can
see what's around possible anchorages, etc...

I agree with you Roger.

After a recent reformating of this computer I downloaded Google Earth just
last week. In the previous version I could not see my summer place due to
cloud cover however I was pleased to see that there were new pictures which
did not have the clouds. I did some more exploring of the area trying to
see either my boat at the island or my car at the marina. I don't think the
resolution is as good as the previous photos as I could not zoom in as
closely with any clarity. Needlesss to say I was unable to see the boat at
the island and could not zoom in close enough to see if it was at the marina.

After a bit of looking, I noticed in the lower left corner a date of June
2002. I can only surmise that is the date that picture was taken.

Spot on Pascal

Imagery dated 2004-2005

The French website is

www.geoportail.fr

and covers only France - not intuitive to use - imagery in my area still out
of date - useable resolution.
