Bob, I will show up Wed with a copy of my design of paravanes for the K39.

Frank Lawlor and all others from Huddleston HuddlestonB_D@msn.com
You are correct. Most of the prices are outrageous. The design estimate
(~$20,000) for flopper stoppers from Krogen was, I believe, a way of

telling

me to get lost (along with all the other purchasers of Krogen 39's). I

think

this attitude will eventually come back to bite Krogen in the butt,

However

the economy is currently hot and they are getting more orders than they

can

handle. Even though they are expensive, I am going ahead with the Naiads

and

hope that they add a lot to coastal and open ocean passages. From San
Francisco to Seattle the weather, current and seas are usually pretty
"snotty". This is my last toy and will be our home for many years, so I

am

trying to ensure that we enjoy the whole experience.
Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate hearing other's opinions.

The following is a very belated two cent comment: I have just returned

from

the onerous task of getting my old boat down to the lower Bahamas thus
missing out on some fine winter weather.  In catching up on e-mail, my
breath was taken away by the costs of a hydraulic bow thruster and

design

of flopper stoppers for a 39 foot boat (Huddleston 3/13/98).  I might be
missing some important subtle points here but I calculate that all of

the

bits and pieces of a hydraulic bow thruster (tunnel, hydraulic pump,
hydraulic motor, prop unit, hoses and controls) are easily bought from
equipment suppliers or custom made (tunnel, prop unit) for less than 20
percent of the quoted price from Naiad! The second outrageous quote was

20

grand for design of flopper stoppers.  The Beebe book contains most of

the

design parameters for free.  The application of these concepts to a
particular boat is not exactly rocket science.  I had a set of flopper
stoppers designed and built for my 42 foot custom aluminum motor sailer

for

a small percentage of the design price by the builder (Dave Laux
Boatbuilders of Georgetown DEL laux@cd.net). An installation for a power
boat can be designed for push button deployment.  Even our sailboat
deployment system was a very low strain operation and worked

beautifully.

I have budgeted a mere pittance for both bow thruster and flopper

stoppers

on the 40 foot trawler now being assembled.  If I had to deal with the

sort

of costs quoted to Mr. Huddleston, I would have to take up golf!
