ARTIST TRAINING COHORT AND PERMANENT PUBLIC ART PROJECT

Optional workshop: March 20, 2018, 6-7:30pm, Portland Avenue Community Center, 3513 Portland Ave E, Tacoma, WA 98404
Deadline: April 2, 2018, 11:59pm
Budget: $500 participation-based stipend, $1,000 for a hands-on training project, and opportunity to compete for a $20,000 permanent public art project
Eligibility: must live in Pierce County, 18 years or older

Opportunity
Metro Parks Tacoma will select a cohort of up to ten artists to participate in a free public art training program, with the goal of preparing artists to move from a studio practice to creating public artworks. Through classroom sessions with experts and a hands-on training project, the cohort will learn about public art, practice responding to calls, write their own project proposals, practice presenting proposals, create and install a temporary public artwork, and leave with portfolio pieces for future applications. Each artist will receive a $500 attendance-based stipend upon completion of the training program, with an additional $1,000 budget for the hands-on training project. Participants will also create a proposal for a permanent public artwork opportunity at the Eastside Community Center. One artist or team will be selected to create their proposed project, supported by a $20,000 budget.

The cohort will be selected to reflect the diversity of the Eastside, which could include different art forms, ethnicities, cultural experiences, ages, backgrounds, abilities, etc. Artists will be selected to complement each other and create a diverse working group. The selection panel will reserve the right to not fill all 10 cohort openings and/or re-open the opportunity to create a more diverse and/or complementary working group. Priority will be given to artists with a tie to the Eastside community. Artists of color, first and second generation immigrants, and Indigenous artists are especially encouraged to apply.
