An impressive 119 species were tallied on last Saturday's SM CBC. Notable
species included Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Black
Scoter, Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Clapper Rail, American Woodcock,
Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull, Razorbill, Long-eared Owl, Short-eared Owl,
American Kestrel, Lapland Longspur, Palm Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Chipping
Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, and Dickcissel. The count period species
tally (Greater White-frontedXCanada Goose, Common Eider, Turkey Vulture,
Purple Sandpiper, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Brown Creeper, American Pipit,
and Common Yellowthroat) was also remarkable.
What was missed? Not much. The short list included Screech Owl, Black
Vulture, Sanderling, White-crowned Sparrow, and Purple Finch. Sanderling
was a particular disappointment, and only 14 Dunlin were found.
Historically, count day totals would have to be estimated as flocks of
these Calidrids were regularly found in the high-hundreds, on both sides of
Housatonic.
There are still CBCs to enjoy! Details and contact information for
Guilford-LIS, New London, Bristol, Edwin Way Teale-Trail Wood, Old
Lym-Saybrook, and Pauling (Hidden Valley) are available on the COA
Calendar.

I'd failed to mention we also had a House Wren on 12/23; always a good find for a CT CBC.
