Maine Cat P-38 hits 25 knots

Hi Mark -

Is this light ship, or half-load, or what? The fact that the builder is
using decimals in the displacement makes me wonder.

Regards,

John
"Seahorse"

FYI - haven't seen anyone pass this on.

I was able to visit Dick  for the hybrid trials back in April, but can't get
away this month to head back  east.

Subject: P-38 hits 25  knots

Maine cat is very excited to share some early test results on  the
performance of the P-38 with the 160 hp Volvo's.  Yesterday with the  Volvo
technicians on board, we maintained 25 knots in flat seas at  WOT,
burning 16 gallons per hour.  According to the technicians we were  only
running the engines at 82% of their capacity.  Turbo boost pressure  was 17
psi and it should be 23 psi when the engines are fully loaded.  This is
a lot of power we can not use since our props are not  pitched
correctly.  We are looking for 27 knots as our real top  end.

Even with these props, we achieved a combined fuel burn of 4.9  gallons
per hour at 15 knots.  Not bad for a 11.4 ton  vessel.
Tomorrow the props come off and we will be adding a number 5 cup to  the
blades to increase the engine loading.

We will be shooting a video  next week to add to our website updates and
gathering complete fuel burn data  once we get the props to load the
Volvos properly.

It is still not too  late to attend our sea trials if you have an
interest in purchasing a new  production P-38 for 2008 or the early part 2009.
Trials end on the  21st of November.  Pre-production pricing will save
you $30k.

We  believe the P-38 is the only 11.4 ton displacement production power
cat that  can run at 25 knots with only twin 160 diesels.  We must of
done  something right on the back of that napkin.

Thanks again for your  interest in our exciting new P-38 fuel efficient
(and fast) power cat.

John,  I'm not sure exactly.  When I went to see the first hull in April,
he had various water tanks and sand bags in the bottom of the hull to
approx the full up weight.  I don't remember which spec he had it loaded
to.

These numbers below are from http://www.mecat.com/indexpower.htm, so his
quote of 11.4 tons would match the design waterline.

Weight dry (no fluids) out of the shop = 14,200 lbs.
Weight full tanks plus 2500 lbs. of gear = 19,920 lbs.
Design waterline = 22,800 lbs.
Reserve buoyancy = 2880 lbs.
Prismatic Coefficient = .69
Bridgedeck clearance (full load) = 31 inches
Center of Gravity (full load) = 21b above DWL
Hull beam to length ratio = 1 to 13.5
