Bob,
I had an interesting thing happen two years ago.  We suffered about $6K collateral damage when my neighbor's sailboat took a direct lightning strike.  I had a well respected electrician from a well respected local yard prepare an estimate for my insurance company.  The insurance company then insisted on having a surveyor inspect the boat.  I agreed and had my elecrician attend the inspection also.  I knew I was going to be OK when the surveyor told my electrician "I met you a couple of years ago.  You taught the ABYC course on marine electrical"!  So I guess that some of these guys do try to become professionals.  The trick, of course, is to find the right one!
