Windlass advice

All this wonderful information on anchors has inspired me to as the Forum for advice on a new windlass. The boat I'm renovating had an Ideal which corroded to death. I need to replace it.

The boat is a Huckins 46' sedan, Gross tonnage - 29, Net tonnage 20. We will be cruising the East coast and the Bahama's.  Since my wife isn't as strong as Jill, the windlass will have to do all the work.

Thanks to one and all,

George

Hard to beat an Ideal one, esp with what is available today.  I know Ideal
will do a 'rebuild' package for several of their units - even old ones.  You
might try contacting them and see if yours qualifies.  Might come out about
the same price as a lesser quality new brand. . . .

You are lucky! The excellent Ideal Company is in East Greenwich, RI and
they will refurbish your winch regardless of age. Everyone on this list who
has dealt with them has raved about their service.

Thanks for the information, but I'm told by the yard that the whole inside
works is dead and can't be repaired. Sad, since I understand they are very
good. But it didn't have a chain gypsy either and that would add a
considerable amount to the repair/upgrade.

My God, yes. Consult Ideal, not the yard! Do you always seek biased
opinions? Ideal doesn't need your business; you need Ideal. They are
embarrassed that they have some windlasses that corroded and are ready to
replace those parts with SS and bronze. For them, replacing or rebuilding a
motor is routine.

Maybe what you need is a new yard.  Even a rusted out 60 year old Ideal is
better than 90% of what is sold today.  Your call, but myself I would ring
up Ideal Monday and talk to them, and if the yard gives you flack consider
that a very bad warning sign....

Taken from the Ideal Windlass Company's web site:

IDEAL will rebuild any of its equipment. Nearly all old windlasses sent
to IDEAL can be rebuilt and this is a cost effective alternative to
purchasing a new unit. We frequently rebuild windlasses from the 1940's
and 1950's. See some amazing examples!!!

To have your windlass rebuilt:

Remove it from the boat.
Send it to to the address below  with a note inside the box including
your name, address and phone number and what you would like done.

  • We will call you with an estimate before proceeding.
  • Repairs generally take 1-2 weeks.

Re-chroming of above deck parts is also available.

Having had my Ideal apart more than once, I can say that this is
horsepucky. The Ideals have about 10 moving parts, all of which can be
replaced. Call Ideal, talk to The Man (grandson of the founder, I think),
he'll set you up. You can also go visit their shop, it's a cool place.

The yard guy is full of bull. I took my Ideal windless to the Ideal shop in RI. Was driving to Boston so I dropped by. The owner took me through the shop. A True machine shop!
My boat is from 1973. He took a look at the serial number on the windless, opened a filing cabinet and pulled out the original bill of sale!

The windless was completely seized. He took 2 days to rebuild to brand new, what a piece of machinery.
