As a result of some research I stumbled onto "The
Circumnavigators" by Donald Holm, 1974. My wife brought one home from
the library and I liked it so well I ordered a used one from Amazon,
$7.98 including shipping, there are five left. Each chapter chronicles
the stories of adventures, mostly early twentieth century. Some of these
guys took off with nothing more than a pocket watch, a sextant, and some
crude charts.
I've just started reading but it looks to be very
interesting.
