Subject: Albin 36 Rudder Post Leak
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 18:04:25 -0400
I have had a leak around the rudder post of my Albin 36 and it's getting =
worse, but I can see no way from inside the boat to access the point =
where the post comes through the hull. I've called Albin, but they =
haven't been helpful. I'm having the boat hauled next week. Anybody out =
there who can offer some insight on how to get at this area, and what =
I'm liable to find there?

If your packing is not the culprit, it gets more complicated.
I am not familiar with Albin construction as to whether they used a metal
rudder-shaft tube or a fiberglassed-in rudderport.
Some of the causes of leaks at this point are caused from differential
expansion, vibration, or shock.
(And we all know what shock means !)
All of the above can cause the fiberglass to separate from the rudder tube
and cause leaks.
The shaft tube will lie between the sole and the hull and to find a leak
there it would be to your advantage to gain entry while the boat is in the
water to inspect that area because it will be hard to determine exactly
where the leak is coming from when the boat is out of the water.
I would advise you to borrow or buy the book by Alan H. Vaitses, "The
Fiberglass Repair Manual" and look on pages 124-127. You will have a better
understanding of the construction of your boat and possibly be able to make
the repairs yourself or at least be knowledgeable when facing the yard
estimate for the repair.
