Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWell, being from Michigan, I've only had oysters a few times, and had a bit of an indifferent attitude to them. But now we just attended the Annual Oyster Roast at the Corinthian Yacht Club on the Potomac....what a treat! There is one of those wide old pictures on the wall there with about 200 folks in their finest at the oyster roast in 1924, so I think they know what they're doing.
First came the supplies....24 quarts of shucked oysters, a few bushels of local oysters and a couple of bags of another special variety.......lots of supporting equipment and supplies.
Then came the oysters..
Roast oysters....done directly over a woof fire, steel plate and covered with wet burlap...steamed until they open.....a couple of shovels at a time.
Scalded oysters....done in a couple of pots.
Fresh oysters on the half shell.
Oysters Rockefeller
Oysters Adriatic
Oysters Chesapeake
Oyster stew
Scalloped oysters
And even oyster shooters!
So, another new experience. You might want to consider this event if you find yourself still in the north next November.....but do go hungry!
