This afternoon, the House Budget Committee began a virtual markuphttps://budget.house.gov/legislation/markups/markup-american-rescue-plan-act-2021-virtual-markup to compile the reconciliation legislation submitted by House committees. Nine of the 12 House committees marked up their recommendations, including the Education and Labor Committee (p. 26). The House Budget Committee advanced the package, sending it to the full House for a vote by the end of this week. It will then be forwarded to the Senate for consideration under reconciliation.
Citizenship civics test:
USCIS announced today that it will revert to the 2008 version of the test (versus new test implemented in 2020), citing President Biden's recent executive orderhttps://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/02/02/executive-order-restoring-faith-in-our-legal-immigration-systems-and-strengthening-integration-and-inclusion-efforts-for-new-americans/ calling for a full review of naturalization processes and agencies to eliminate barriers to citizenship and ensure eligibility for all individuals.
USCIS will conduct a webinar on Wednesday, March 3, 3:30-4:30 EThttps://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDHSCISINVITE/subscriber/new?topic_id=USDHSCISINVITE_399. Presenters will give an overview of the 2008 and 2020 tests and provide resources for test preparation.
DOE Undersecretary:
On Friday, James Kvall was nominated as Department of Education Undersecretaryhttps://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/02/19/president-biden-announces-key-nominees-of-his-health-and-human-service-education-and-veteran-affairs-teams/, a position responsible for postsecondary education, student aid, career technical education and adult education. He is president of The Institute for College Access & Success, and previously worked during Democratic administrations in the Department of Education and the Domestic Policy Council, as well as for the House and the Senate.
