Hi Bob,
I have to disagree! Whereas a chain hook may not distort the chain, it
distorts the hook, which will likely break (especially the Chinese hooks) when
side-loaded. Para-tech recommends a devil's claw, which has the added advantage of
not disengaging from the chain when it goes slack. A plate-type "hook" as you
suggest will, and, IMO, is only suitable for anchoring. And, I don't see how
you could successfully use a smaller line (snubber) on a sea anchor rode.

Even a single chain hook does not distort the chain. Chain hooks are used on
truck load binders routinely and I have not heard of a problem there. Chains
usually fail with shock loading--with a snubber and chain hook, there is no
shock loading.

Does someone have a website that I could post a picture of my Washington Chain, Marquip 3/8" chain snubber? I would mail you the picture and you would post. If you saw this "hook" you would see that it isn't going to bend and it places a straight load on the chain by grasping both sides of a link equally.
