George,

Are you sure Ben Gray only got 1.39 gallons per mile? Knowing Diesel
Ducks, I'd think it was more like 3 miles per gallon.

But you don't need to spend nearly $2-million and build such an
overly long boat . . . as illustrated by Ben Gray with Idlewild:
Nonstop from South Africa to Australia at 1.39 gallons per nautical
mile.

From the Idlewild website:

"Long range - an average of 5.27 lph (1.39 US gph)
over 4500 miles at 6.4 kts with fuel to spare on our
longest crossing in the Southern Ocean."

Works out to under a quart of diesel per mile. But I
must add - ability to do 11+ knots at an economical
speed is impressive.

Incidentally, Idlewild is for sale for $500K Cdn
(~$450K USD)
