9/11 - There was a large gull flock hawking flying ants over Harkness
Memorial State Park in Waterford around 5 pm when I arrived. I estimated
about 300 Laughing Gulls as well as smaller numbers of Ring-billed and
Herring. I also had at least two Forster's Terns in with the flock, the
first time I've seen terns take insects. The ant swarm itself was quite
impressive. I uploaded a couple of short videos to my Flickr account to
give an idea:
Some of the gull flock: http://flic.kr/p/2hefh5E
A fraction of the ant swarm: http://flic.kr/p/2hecFH3
Afterwards, there was a flock of 50+ Laughing Gulls hawking what i assume
to be more flying ants about 2 miles inland near Route 1.
