Spaceworks Tacoma: creative use for vacant space
Spaceworks Tacoma is a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma, Shunpike and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce designed to activate empty storefronts and vacant space in downtown Tacoma.
The initiative makes no- and low-cost temporary space available to artists, fledgling entrepreneurs, and arts organizations and community groups. Program participants will transform vacant spaces into dynamic points of interest with creative energy and artistic enterprise.
The Spaceworks Tacoma initiative nurtures the vision of a revitalized downtown with:
1 Artscapes (temporary installations and performances)
2 Artist residencies
3 Creative retail and services
4 Pop-up events
Filling up empty retail space with engaging visual displays or dynamic retail-even temporarily-can bring life to the streets and expand the possibilities for previously vacant space. A cluster of activated storefronts benefits everyone: artists and entrepreneurs, community groups, property owners, existing retailers and citizens.
