In regard to the Custom 45 cat.
Several things struck me as I looked at the pictures and the video.
First the boat sat very well on her lines. It will be interesting to see how
she sits when full of fuel and the 3000 to 5000 pounds of cruising gear.
I was surprised to see the amount of bow wake. Wild Wind IV hardly makes a
ripple at 10 mph.
I like the idea of the drive system. It makes a lot of sense. I looked for
just a unit when I started WWIV in 1999. I could not find anything made for
the pleasure market.
There is one problem with using that type of drive. There are no rudders.
Malcolm clued me in that with no rudder the boat would be very hard to handle
in large following seas.
I have proved this with WWIV. When coasting down the WA. and OR coast we were
in very large following sees and even with the large barn door rudders there
was some amount of yawing.
I have to admit that I was running on one engine on auto pilot. Going 10 knots
surfing to over 15. Malcolm told me that he learned the hard way on size of
rudder.
I like the simplicity of the engine room.
I look forward to see how she does when she is loaded for cruising.
