Is there anything special that needs to be done to run the Development
Snapshots?

I thought to investigate the latest Development Snapshot.  I downloaded and
unzipped the latest Windows snapshot:

OpenSCAD-2023.04.04
x86 (64-bit) - zip package - 52 MB
sha256 - sha512

I just ran the openscad.com file and tried looking at one of my models.  It
did not go well, giving me many errors.

I presume that I'm doing something wrong.  What is the correct way to run a
Development Snapshot?

I always run the installer rather than using the zip, but haven't found
any reason that special handling is required.

What errors are you getting?
