Nama Budhathoki and I have just completed a paper on motivations to contribute to volunteer geographic information (VGI). I can send on the draft if you are interested.
Nama has done thorough reviews of literature on VGI, volunteerism, serious leisure and peer production to explore motivations to contribute to online geographic systems. Our joint paper explores results from a study of OpenStreetMap based on ideas of motivation to contribute to crowds and/or communities online.
These are Nama's background papers ...

I am hoping to start a new research project on using social media to encourage volunteering.
I am guessing there's a big literature on why people get involved in volunteer work, what sustains participation over time, and why they drop out?
Are there classic papers in this area I should read?
Thanks for your help!
