National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsHi, everyone,
NCL is considering the 2015 dates for Adult Education and Family Literacy week. In recent years this week has been designated as the third week of September. This year that week falls from September 21 to 26, 2015. Jeff Carter, NCL board president, and I are reaching out to you for your input on that week so that we can finalize the dates.
If anyone has any concerns about September 21 to 26 as this year's AEFL week, kindly contact me by Friday, June 5, at 12 noon. Thank you in advance for your input!

JoAnn,
Yes — we talked about this — I’m sure I raised it — but ultimately I think we decided that since we had the whole week, AEFL Week events could be scheduled on other days that week. What do others think?
No week works perfectly. Jewish holidays stretch into October for some. Rosh Hashanah, of course, is the week before. As for the week of the 28th, I believe there was a preference not to get into October, although I don’t think we felt strongly about it. We also looked at the 7th but I think this was seen as not optimal because of Labor Day.

Definitely, the week of Labor Day is not good. With folks starting up, again, the beginning of September, is a hard time. Then, you add folks being out an evening and 1-2 days for Rosh Hashona and an evening and day for Yom Kippur, it makes September more difficult no matter what. So, Jackie, you may be right that the last week in September won't work, so you need to stay with the recommended week.

Hi Everyone,
A couple of years ago we conducted a poll asking those in the field which dates they preferred. This was because Senator Murray had gotten complaints from constituents in Washington that AEFL Week was too early in September and before their programs opened. Having heard similar feedback and because she was a cosponsor of the Senate Resolution, we polled practitioners in the field asking when was best for them. While I don’t recall there being a large response, the majority at that time favored the 3rd week in September. No single time is best. But it is definitely difficult to do anything at all if the week falls during a week when programs are closed.
Hope that helps,
Jackie

Thank you, Jackie for sharing this history. We did take that history into account (although I could not remember the reason why early September was not desirable until you reminded us), and in general we have always strived to avoid weeks that include Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. (That’s why we look at it every year and haven’t simply set AEFL week as the third week of September into perpetuity...)
It is a particularly challenging year this year because of Labor Day being so late and because of the way the other dates shake out (last year, for example, Yom Kippur was on a weekend.) Since Rosh Hashanah was the second week, and since it takes up two days, we thought the week of Yom Kippur was the least-bad option, with the understanding that this might limit the opportunities for events recognizing AEFL week around the country. I probably should have explained our rationale for the decision before sending out the proposed date for feedback. That’s my fault.
Since I have received comments both on and off the list expressing concerns about designating AEFL Week that week, I’ve set up a quick poll for members to weigh in on this before making our final decision. I have included that last week of September. We initially rejected this — perhaps too quickly — because half of that week is in October, (and it’s not holiday-free, either), but maybe that will be the desired preference.
