Prof Evans,

Sounds like a great course. I think Lee Rainie & Barry Wellman's new
Networked: The New Social Operating System might suit your needs. (Of
course, I am a bit biased).

It's out in May from MIT Press, but I can get you page proofs now.

Hi CITASA,

I'm teaching a new course next quarter entitled Internet & Society and searching for good readings that map the landscape (I have several, but am looking for more/better). If you have a syllabus you would be willing to share, or know of a fantastic (especially underappreciated) article or book relevant to any of the following topics, I would be grateful.

history, growth and structure of the Internet
"digital divide(s)": by class, race, age, communities, occupations and countries
online identities and intimacy
creative mashups and intellectual property
political participation
discourse and polarization
online cultures and diversity
immersive and virtual reality
Information overload, "reading" and thinking with the Internet
online markets, web services and work

Sincere thanks,

James

Prof. Evans, (and others teaching similar topics)

The Open Society Foundation has commissioned approximately 60 country
reports under the title Mapping Digital Media, http://bit.ly/nbrm0x. They
extend well beyond just questions related to the internet, but could be
useful since they place it in a larger context. Full disclosure my
colleagues from the New America Foundation and I authored the US report,
http://bit.ly/u5hTYv. There are also a number of thematic reports available
at the same url. In many countries I think these represent the best
comprehensive source of data available.

Additionally if you would be interested in having one or more of the
authors speaking to your class via Skype I can put you in touch with the
country authors of both the published and unpublished reports. I suspect
many would be prepared to speak.

You are probably aware of it but I also suspect Rebecca MacKinnon's (in
full disclosure also a colleague) new book, Consent of the Networked: The
Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom could be useful. See
http://amzn.to/qGkKaI

PS Barry - I've just put your book in my Amazon cart. Very pleased to learn
about it.
