We arrived at Lady's Island Marina yesterday. We photographed the underside of the damaged 65 foot bridge when we passed under it, using a powerful telephoto' 12X. The pictures when viewed on TV show the large cracks in the concrete the sunlight shines through the solid concret. The tug towing the crane caused the crane to hit the bridge so hard that the bridge actually lifted up and then settled back down on the crane. The tow had to wait a couple of hours for the tide (7 feet) to go out and free the crane. Then the tow which was a dredge sting of barges continued to Savannah. The mess left behind in this community is terrible. It can take hours to get anywhere. The two lane swing bridge is the only way for traffic to cross to the mainland from this string of SC Islands. The area has been heavily developed without any thought to infrastructure. The state sent 30 Troopers to help with traffic control. On their first day a trooper hit a lady pedestrian and killed he
r. Businesses are devastated with their customers and supplies unable to reach them. They have opened one lane of the damaged bridge, with frequent closings for inspection A huge mess. The repairs are estimated to take 3 months.
