On our DD 453s, there are two Zinc Anodes in each heat exchanger.
The anode length is 3 3/8” excluding the top threaded part which screws into the brass nut.
During the hot summer month we do not use Mischief, she is tied up in the marina for several month.
Every time I inspect the Zincs, I notice that maybe only 3/8” of the anode is actively immersed in the raw water coolant and slowly deteriorating.
Once the active part has deteriorated new anodes have to be installed and a good portion of the “shortened “ Zinc has to be thrown away.
In this normal ?

Hi Hans, what you described sounds like it would be normal... only the
portion of the zincs immersed in the water eroding; I'd still check with a
DD dealer though. I know with our engine, even if the engine isn't run,
just sits, allows the exchanger zincs to erode as long as the exchanger
remains full of water. If drained, the zincs become inactive.
