Harris-Stowe State University to Celebrate TRIO Day 2012

ST. LOUIS, MO (February 9, 2012) - Harris-Stowe State University will
collaborate with St. Louis Community College campuses at Forest Park,
Florissant Valley and Wildwood, as well as Ranken Technical College and
Hi-Tech Charities in an effort to bring TRIO programs together for
National TRIO Day, Saturday, February 25, 2012.

TRIO, a federal program, includes eight initiatives targeted to serve
and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students and
persons with disabilities in matriculating through the academic pipeline
from middle school to post-baccalaureate. TRIO programs, including
Upward Bound, Student Support Services and the McNair Scholars are U.S.
Department of Education funded and designed to support disadvantaged
students at host institutions. TRIO Day encourages students to give back
through workshops, community service and academic-focused activities.

This year, on the campus of Harris-Stowe, students from area TRIO
programs will participate in workshops that touch on topics such as
dressing for success; personal image and scholar-athletes, to name a
few. Additionally, parents--through special sessions--will have the
opportunity to learn more about social media, teenage empowerment and
parental rights. Highlights for the day will be various guest speakers
and personal stories from successful TRIO alumni.

For more information on TRIO at Harris-Stowe, contact Linda Todoroff,
director of Educational Talent Search.
