Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsFred - we’re hoping you might have some inside scoop on Erie Canal. We know it’s currently open, but do you know whether it’s on the razor’s edge of closing again if there’s any more rain?
The reason for asking is that after spending the last month on Lake Champlain, we’re planning on leaving the lake on Thursday, with our preferred departure route down the Champlain Canal, then out the Erie to the Oswego and onward to Canada and the Rideau Canal. We really don’t want to get stuck if the Erie closes again. If you think there’s any possibility that it might (too much water already, more rain coming?), then we’ll just head north out the Chambly to the St. Lawrence and revise our travels a bit.
Can you give us any insight/advice in making our decision? What do your friends working the canal system think? Thanks so much!!!

Well, no crystal ball needed after all: portions of Erie and Oswego just shut down due to high water. I guess we're heading north to the Chambly and St Lawrence River.
