New blog post on CARES Act & adult ed student funding

Hi NCL colleagues,

Katie B., Amy Ellen and I have a new blog post up that calls attention to
the very problematic decision made by the Education Department on the CARES
Act student emergency aid funding. We specifically call out adult education
students in community colleges as needing to be made eligible for these
funds, both by ED now and by Congress in future bills (e.g. CARES 2.)
Please share.

Not all adult education students are served in a community college setting; let’s not forget those served in the K-12 Systems and CBO’s.
Thanks,
Tom

Yes, of course -- the focus of the blog post is on the higher ed
stabilization funds that were given to community colleges, so that's why we
focused on that. Thank you for the clarification!

Tom,
Hope all is well with you and your family on this time of crisis.
I just saw two tweets this morning indicating strong COABE support for Trump.I hope that this is a mistake.
Can you clarify?

Hi Art,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As the CEO for COABE, I wanted to respond to your email below and assure you and our fellow colleagues that, as we have always been, COABE remains bipartisan and supports every administration that we work with. Like you, I have personally met with, supported, taken pictures with, and had conference calls and meetings with John King, Arne Duncan, Michael Wooten, Johan Uvin, and Besty DeVos. I have met with many legislators on both sides of the aisle as have many of our board members, state association leaders, and members. COABE has hosted many advocacy sessions and Capitol Hill Days over the last few years encouraging our members to reach out to and support both sides of the aisle for the good of our adult learners, our educators, and the related funding streams that keep our adult ed programs open.

As our social media work has grown, we have shared those meetings and moments out with our social media followers and have encouraged all of our members to do the same. Our goal is to encourage all members everywhere to work as closely with their legislators as possible for the good of the field. We have always said that adult education should be the most bipartisan issue, and our organization will continue to work with both Democrats and Republicans and all administrations that we can to move the needle for adult education.

With regard to two "likes" on Donald Trump's twitter feed that were recently brought to my attention on this memorial weekend, I have personally looked into this issue and ensured that those "likes" were removed. I did so because when I looked into this, I found that one "like" referenced that the number of deaths due to the Coronavirus was down, and the other "like" supported the administration specifically. As neither of those "likes" were specific to adult education and thus were outside of our mission and could possibly be perceived as partisan, I have been assured that those have been removed. I also instructed our social media coordinator to post to Twitter that COABE is bipartison, does not have political leanings, and that the "likes" were due to our account being hacked.

I'm saddened by the immediate calls by a few individuals via Twitter to "#boycottCOABE" and to pull in as many other organizations and individuals as possible, especially in light of the fact that the two "likes" were truly due to our account being hacked. We have addressed the issue and taken the necessary security measures to ensure that it does not happen again in the future.

Thanks again for bringing it to our attention, and Art, please always know that I am just an email or phone call away should you have questions about COABE, our mission, or our initiatives.

Sincerely,

Sharon Bonney

We specifically call out adult education students in community colleges as needing to be made eligible for these funds, both by ED now and by Congress in future bills (e.g. CARES 2.) Colleagues,

I am writing to follow up on the message that Sharon Bonney, CEO of http://www.coabe.org, sent on Sunday regarding events that transpired over the weekend on social media. Sharon's message is attached below for your reference. I spoke directly with Sharon yesterday and she reiterated the points made in the email.

Both COABE and the National Coalition for Literacy, of which COABE is a member, are nonpartisan organizations that work across social and political lines to promote equitable educational opportunity for all adults. NCL recognizes COABE as a trusted and valuable partner in the nonpartisan advocacy work that is so essential for the advancement of the adult education field, and affirms the bipartisan nature of its many outreach efforts over the years.

May we all experience greater and greater success in our ongoing bipartisan advocacy work for our field, our teachers, and our adult learners.

Deborah

I have met with many legislators on both sides of the aisle as have many of
our board members, state association leaders, and members. COABE has hosted many advocacy sessions and Capitol Hill Days over the last few years encouraging our members to reach out to and support both sides of the aisle for the good of our adult learners,
our educators, and the related funding streams that keep our adult ed programs open.

As our social media work has grown, we have shared those meetings and moments out with our social media followers and have encouraged all of our members to do the same. Our goal is to encourage all members everywhere to work as closely with their legislators
as possible for the good of the field. We have always said that adult education should be the most bipartisan issue, and our organization will continue to work with both Democrats and Republicans and all administrations that we can to move the needle for adult
education.

With regard to two "likes" on Donald Trump's twitter feed that were recently brought to my attention on this memorial weekend, I have personally looked into this issue and ensured that those "likes" were removed. I did so because when I looked into this, I
found that one "like" referenced that the number of deaths due to the Coronavirus was down, and the other "like" supported the administration specifically. As neither of those "likes" were specific to adult education and thus were outside of our mission and
could possibly be perceived as partisan, I have been assured that those have been removed. I also instructed our social media coordinator to post to Twitter that COABE is bipartison, does not have political leanings, and that the "likes" were due to our account
being hacked.

Sincerely,

Sharon
Bonney

Tom,

Hope all is well with you and your family on this time of crisis.

I just saw two tweets this morning indicating strong COABE support for Trump.I hope that this is a mistake.

Can you clarify?
