To: Northstar Newfoundland Club <newflink@nsnewf.org>Well I'm not an expert by any means, but I have spent a lot of money on brushes and combs and shedding tools and dematters that have been recommended to me at pet stores and I think I have finally found that these four items that I use on my dog are the best for me. For mats and sticky pine sap and burrs and things like that I use the Safari and for helping her with her shedding I use the Mars coat king. just for general grooming I used the comb and this amazing oblong shaped brush made by Chris Christensen and it's a number 20. the coat king can be pretty aggressive so when you use it you just have to use a little restraint. But it works amazingly! I could not believe how good it worked last fall when she was beginning her fall blowout. I was a little scared at first after I used it on her because it did remove so much of her undercoat but her winter coat came in beautifully. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Elizabeth,
I have a Mars combing tool but have not used it much. It seems to pull out the undercoat and guard hairs. Do you recommend using a coat moisturizer with it? It was pricey, so If I could get some tips I think I would use it more often. His undercoat seems to have matted in places and wondering if I should snip those parts out first?
Thanks

I would highly recommend the Mars double wide coat king. I got the 18 blade on amazon and absolutely love it! Here is a link: http://www.marscoatking.com/
if anyone would like to check it out as well.

Yesterday a number of people asked about two of the grooming tools I was using for getting undercoat out during shedding season, as well as mat removal.
Here are a couple of sources:
Petedge (https://www.petedge.com )has two tools very similar to the Oliver Slant Comb that I used (you can also find the Oliver comb on eBay every now and then). I think the first one is the closest to what I was using.
and several of these are good for getting at mats:
Another good source is Cherrybrook: (http://1omt.net/www.cherrybrook.com/ )
They have a page with “rakes and mat combs” http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cfm/a/catalog.catshow/catid/213/cname/Rakes_and_Mat_Combs

I felt the same way after just deshedding my newf. She looked like a
different dog. I'm not a fan of shaving the coat unless there is, God
forbid, a medical reason or if she got seriously matted. I'm afraid it
can alter the integrity of the coat but that's just me. I'm a little
obsessive about keeping her combed out. And I could open a store with all
of the tools and shampoos, conditioners and finishing sprays I've bought
trying to find the best for her. :)
Love my girl! Hope I can make the next meeting so we can meet each other's
pups!
