Hi All,
Had a nice morning in the field with a dozen or so birders. Highlights included 3 Lapland Longspurs (all visible at once - including the bird probably mentioned by Jamie earlier that was very bright), 1 Ipswich Savannah Sparrow, 1 Clay-colored Sparrow, 5 Snow Buntings (Old Gun Club roof), 5 American Pipits (Long Beach). With post walk gang 1 Snowy Owl at Penfield Reef (on rooftops east of beach) and one American Kestrel at Sherwood Island. For all the uncommon birds perhaps most impressive was the movement of perhaps as many as 4000+ Greater Scaup up Long Island sound at around 10.00am. It was quite astonishing. Lighting was terrible and many birds seemed to be almost mid-sound but the birds that I could safely ID were all Greater Scaup (from wing pattern). I spoke to Jim Dugan in Stratford and he, Patrick and Frank Gallo had noticed the same phenomenon at Shippan Point earlier in the day - their estimate was 3,500 birds.
