Position Summary

This position is responsible for designing DIHI technology and workflow solutions that address diverse stakeholder needs. This position ensures that DIHI’s technology and workflow solutions are grounded in the principles of fairness, accountability, and trust. This position interfaces directly with clinical and operational stakeholders and Duke Health patients to understand the challenges and barriers to care and scope projects that address core problems. This position also involves directly working with technical team members, including data scientists, data engineers, and solution architects to ensure that technology development efforts align with stakeholder needs. This position will design and test minimal viable solutions and prototypes to test assumptions about stakeholder needs; surface insights that drive iterations of product development; design and conduct user studies to generate relevant learnings; and, act as a liaison between product managers, data scientists, data engineers, clinician users, business unit leaders, and compliance and regulatory support staff to determine the requirements for novel technology and workflow solutions.

This position will work closely with the DIHI Program Director to identify and pursue opportunities to engage various stakeholders and cultivate communities of learning to gather diverse feedback throughout the product lifecycle. This role will draw upon expertise in social science research and user experience design research to improve DIHI development efforts and ensure that solutions address stakeholder needs. Lastly, this position will help teach students and trainees involved in DIHI workforce development programs and may supervise trainees conducting design research. Successfully carrying out responsibilities will require a strong interest in product innovation, ethics, law, and policy.  This position will maintain comprehensive and contemporary knowledge of  human-centered design and qualitative research methods and best practices, with a focus on the design and development of products in the health setting. This role will join an entrepreneurial environment where a portfolio of innovations are effectively managed and priorities are dynamic and responsive to stakeholder needs. This position reports directly to the DIHI Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities of Position:

  • Conduct user research and stakeholder engagement to gather product requirements and align development efforts with stakeholder needs
    *  Works directly with product managers, clinician end-users, operational leaders, and patients to identify relevant stakeholders, map workflow processes, and define core problems that need to be addressed through innovation
    *  Designs and conducts user studies to identify priorities among diverse stakeholders with the goal of informing technology and workflow solution development
    *  Develops and maintains feedback loops from diverse stakeholder groups throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure that iterations and updates address key stakeholder problems
    *  Develops utilities and frameworks to standardize processes for user engagement and testing across DIHI portfolio projects

  • Develops and implements processes to evaluate, monitor, and govern newly developed solutions integrated into care delivery
    *  Works with clinical and operational leaders to identify relevant outcomes and measures to ensure that projects have clear objectives to demonstrate success
    *  Surfaces concerns and challenges from diverse stakeholders related to fairness, accountability, and trust, and designs and conducts studies during product pilots to ensure that concerns are addressed
    *  Develops feedback loops to ensure that user experience expectations and targets continue to be met throughout the product development lifecycle
    *  Reviews product and workflow designs of previously built solutions before integration and develops a process for continuous review and maintenance of solutions
    *  Maintains contemporary knowledge of human-centered design and qualitative research to ensure that product development efforts continue to center around the needs of diverse stakeholders

  • Stakeholder engagement and cultivation of learning community
    *  Works directly with clinical and operational stakeholders to identify requirements, map clinical and operational workflows to identify opportunities for innovations, and prototype solutions
    *  Maintains internal and external network to identify emerging and dynamic needs of Duke Health stakeholders to continuously align product development efforts with stakeholder needs

  • Diffusion and dissemination of technology and workflow solutions
    *  Works directly with DIHI Program Director to identify opportunities to externally validate, adapt, and diffuse health care solutions
    *  Participates in dissemination efforts via academic writing, conference presentations, and internal and external communications related to DIHI projects

The position assists and leads in performing the following core functions:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong background in qualitative research and user-centered design research
  • Background evaluating and studying technology products and platforms
  • Strong background working alongside technical teams and demonstrated ability to understand implications of complex technology products and services
  • Prior experience performing research in clinical settings or other regulated environments is a plus
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Healthcare/research industry experience required
  • Documenting and analyzing workflow and clinical processes
  • Strong background surfacing insights to drive improvements in product or service design
  • 4+ years of experience in social science research or user design research related to technology development

Minimum Requirements:

    • Education: A doctorate degree in sociology, anthropology, human-computer interaction, information studies, or related social science field is required. While a doctorate degree is preferred, candidates with a master’s degree and two years of relevant full-time work experience will be considered.
    • Experience: Preferred Experience: Four years of related experience.

  • Experience bringing technology-enabled products or services to the market
  • Development of frameworks to support design, development, validation, impact assessment, and maintenance of data-driven solutions
