The story of the fire on the T&T list got me thinking about transporting
gasoline for my 2 stroke tender motor. I was simply going to have a 2.5
gallon plastic container lashed to the boat deck railing, but now I'm
wondering if this isn't the best idea. What do voyagers do to transport
fuel? Certainly it's only stored outside, never someplace fumes could
collect (like a deck box or locker). Have any good containers been found?
Thanks!

Keeping the can out of sunlight will decrease the
effects of heat expansion. However, do NOT keep
the gas/oil mixture in the can for that long a
time as gasoline has a tendency to age and
it will foul the tank and your spark-plugs.
Personally, I am investigating, quite seriously,
the diesel outboard motor. Yes, they are expensive
and are quite heavy. With a compression ratio of
20+ to 1 the engine has to be able to handle those
really big compression ratios. Being in the auto
business in my other life, I had to really laugh
at GM's attempts to make an inexpensive diesel
by converting a gasoline engine block, the Chevy
350, to diesel. GM lost untold millions on that one.
There is a great personal story about me taking on
the GM engineering staff at the Hydramatic division.
They ended up with egg on their faces and I ended
up getting fired by my dealer when I was on
vacation in Ireland. That was when I left the auto
industry for good. However, Toyota did entice me back
and they paid me a large amount of money for
what was inside my head. Guess it is finally showing
who was really right. That's my ego showing.
Guess I have to subdue it by laughing at myself.
We will talk more, later.
