Visitors:
We had good numbers of visitors to the tower on Thanksgiving Day. Thanks to
Chip and Kim and Richard from Toronto for great help in spotting. Also
thanks to all the other visitors who showed a keen interest including
Naveed and Mohammed, David and Andrea from Toronto, Jeremy and Jennifer
from LaSalle, Steven from Vancouver and Kevin from Windsor.
Weather:
The day started with a strong westerly wind and a temperature of 9 degC.
The wind remained in the west throughout the day only gaining a slight
north component at the end of the afternoon. At the end of the day the wind
lessened and the sun came out!
Raptor Observations:
Another day of relatively constant streams of Turkey Vultures (2440).
Total species were 11. We had a good variety of raptors but in low numbers
including all the falcons, Northern harrier and Red-tailed, Broad-winged
and Red-shouldered Hawks. Sharp-shinned Hawks (126), were the only other
species with slightly higher numbers.
Non-raptor Observations:
The birds of the day were 2 American White Pelican flying over the marsh
then heading west. We also saw 4 Sandhill Cranes flying to the north.
Ducks are increasing on the marsh with again good numbers of Gadwall and
American Wigeon. Big numbers of American Goldfinch (472) and Chimney Swift
(206) flew north over us today. A few songbirds appeared at the end of the
day with the sun and reducing wind. Ebird list at
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60628060
Predictions:
North winds overnight turning south in the morning. Tomorrow is predicted
to be a bit warmer and maybe rain in the afternoon. Hopefully more raptors
will be encouraged to fly in the morning with the absence of a head wind,
especially buteos. Overnight north winds may bring more songbirds.
