beta engines eating zincs

I installed a Beta 38 hp engine in my 30 ft trawler. I noticed the heat
exchanger zincs were consumed in just a few weeks. I inquired from my local
Beta distributor if he had any idea why this was and he gave the
expected response that I must have some electrical connection wrong. I
spend no time in marinas so he couldn't blame it on stray currents.

Recently I learned from another site that many people with Beta engines
have this same problem and have found no solution.  I wonder if any members
on this list have Beta diesels and if they have problems of longevity with
the heat exchanger zincs.

We're running a 42 HP Westerbeke diesel and replace zincs about every 4
weeks. We run fairly consistently, though when we we sit, we sit for only
2-3 days at a time.  I don't recall what our time frame is for replacing
zincs when just sitting for any length of time. I've considered adding an
inline zinc housing. The inline zinc housing that I'm familiar with, and
have installed in several boats is made by Sendur, and uses a zinc of
approximately 3/4' x 2"; they may have other choices. I haven't done so
because changing out our zinc is easy and the cost for the replacement
zinc, sans plug, is only a coup. We do carry 6-8 extra zincs in order to
always have sufficient quantity should be be in areas where the zincs are
more problematic to obtain.
