Dear CEF Members:

I.              CEF Hill Reception/Website and Advocacy Campaign Launch tomorrow

·      Tomorrow! CEF Reception with Senator Christopher Murphy and launch of new advocacy campaign – We’re excited that so many of you will be attending our 115th Congress welcome reception tomorrow morning, and that Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT) will be speaking to us.  We have been tweeting in advance of the event (follow us @edfunding if you haven’t already!) and urge you to retweet or tweet about it, as well. After tomorrow we’ll launch additional social media efforts that we hope you will amplify to engage all your communities.

Schedule for tomorrow – Nearly 100 members and Hill staffers have already RSVP’d for tomorrow, and several Senators will try to drop by the reception from 8:30-9:30am. Senator Murphy will speak to us at 9:30, and then the second part of the event features the launch of our new advocacy campaign and the unveiling of our website.  Press is welcome.  The event is 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, in 562 Dirksen Senate Office Building.  Please RSVP to Janet Nice atNice@cef.org mailto:Nice@cef.org.

II.            Policy Intelligence and Education News

·      Speaker Ryan supports year-round Pell grants – Politico reports that yesterday Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) came out in support of restoring year-round eligibility for Pell grants, which would let students get a third grant in one year to attend classes during the summer and thus graduate faster.
“I like year-round Pell,” Ryan told a group of Historically Black Colleges and Universities leaders gathered at a summit on Capitol Hill. “I think that makes a lot of sense.”
The FY 2017 education funding bill approved last year by the Senate Appropriations Committee restored year-round Pell grants, but the House version did not.  (Recall that the Senate bill also rescinded $1.2 billion of previously appropriated Pell grant funding.)

·      House Appropriations deadline for Member requests for 2018 – The House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee has posted instructions http://appropriations.house.gov/uploadedfiles/02.23.17_labor_health_and_human_services_and_education_-_fy_2018_dear_colleague_with_member_submission_instructions.pdf for Representatives to submit any funding or language requests to be included in the fiscal year 2018 bill.  The deadline for submissions is April 6.

·      New “Evidence for ESSA” website – The Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University – a CEF member – released a new website http://www.evidenceforessa.org/yesterday that provides information on programs that meet the evidence standards in the Every Student Succeeds Act. See the attached press release for more details.
