Although I don't have a trawler, I subscribed to this forum for the technical
and maintenance information I might find. I have been a lurker for awhile,
thought I would see if my first post comes through ..
Perhaps some of you might be interested in some numbers from the 'other side
of the world'
A: my boat is in Spain
B: my boat is a sailing catamaran, glass fibre, 42' x 20' wide, 2 x 29hp
yanmar diesels.
The boat was 10 years old when purchased 5 years ago. It was 1/2 the price of
a new one.
The boat has averaged less than 6% costs (all inclusive) per year
cost 200k
my expenses per year:
-haul out & antifouling (2K every two years) ..1K
-outside labour ..1K
-sails / repairs ..0,75K
-spares (filters, belts, hoses, fenders, dodger/bimini repair, bulbs etc)
..0,75K
-full insurance including 3rd party (no hurricanes in the Med) ..3K
-fuel ... 6 knots at 2500 rpm = 1 gal/hr. Even with diesel at $5/gal (Europe)
= $1/mile or motoring 25% of the time, 1000 miles = ..0,25K
-slips in other marinas while travelling 20 x $100 ..2K
-slip .. 20' wide needs two slips. I was able to purchase/lease them at 20K
for a period of 17 years. Then they revert back to the government, and can be
re-purchased/leased for an additional 20 years. With taxes, water, electricity
and marina personnel fees .. 2.5k
-(even if I changed both engines every 10 years, it would only add 2K (1%)
/year)
So far over 5 years:
maintenance: haul out, labour, sails, spares ..3.5K = 1,75%
operating: insurance, fuel, slips (voyage), slip (home port) ..7,75K = 3.875%
Total:..11,25K= 5.63%
Conclusion:
Perhaps sailboats are less expensive to maintain than trawlers
Perhaps glass fibre is less expensive to maintain than wood hulls
If I had purchased the boat new, the same 10,75K cost would be 3% of my
purchase price
If I had purchased a 'skunk' the same 10,75K would be 10% of my purchase
price.
So, % of purchase price is not very reliable, since some costs are more or
less fixed (haul out, slip) and the more you pay for your boat, the less (%)
the ownership costs will be.
Perhaps a better 'yardstick' might be the cost per square ft. or even cubic
foot?
