My 60’ trawler Another Asylum came with bilge keels, which were 30” in depth, 22’ long. The delivery from Nova Scotia to Tortola, BVI, convinced me there had to be a better way and I had an anti-roll tank designed and installed, which other than water in the tank had no moving parts, worked as well at anchor, dock, or underway, and caused no drag. In a haul-out the yard crushed one of the bilge keels with the slings so I removed them, picking up 1/2 knot of speed at the same rpm or dropping a 100rpm for the same speed, which when your engines are 2100 max rpm is considerable. I did notice a change in the down sea tracking, but had installed a gyro controlled auto-pilot which just worked a bit harder.
Reducing drag pays for itself every time you use the boat!!

Hi Bob, as we are the 'other yacht' with an Anti Roll Tank, AKA, ART, we've
done thousand of ocean miles, anchored in 100's of known rough anchorages
and can't imanage any other 'stability' system doing the same job. Zero
maintenance, low cost and works at any speed from zero up.
Our recent trip from Honolulu to Ft Myers, Florida was a good example. 8000
nm. Longest non stop leg from HNL to LAX was 18 days/2800 nm. Longest non
refueling run was from LA to Colon, Pamana, 3400 nm.
Wind/waves from all directions and headings on our track. Many hours of
seas to 20' on our stbd fwd quarter with one full broadside over Swan Song
and 3 full gales. A few bad days at sea ;-)
When we left Colon, Panama the port was closed as the pilot boats couldn't
make it out to the merchant ships. they were all watching us ready to
assist as we went out the entrance. For those that know the breakwaters on
the Caribbean side of the Canal the wave were breaking over them at the
entrance. Swan Song did very well as we worked our way thru the waves. ART
doesn't care about boat speed, only the roll period as you know. So whether
having zero or even negative fwd speed on up to or 7-8 kts it works. 30 min
later we were in deeper water and off to Jamaica. Lots of radio chatter
from the pilot boats with us ;-)
We've had many folks aboard underway and at anchor. None can believe Swan
Song's lack of roll. No drag, no fear of fouling, no maintenance. We put
1500 lbs of fresh water in the tank in the BVI in 2005. I drained the tank
just to check it last year 2019 in Ft Myers.....that's it!!
Still can't understand why they haven't caught on.
Hope all is well in the BVI, mate!
Cheers
Dave/Nancy
