Dear all,
Very pleased to announce the publication of my new book The Contentious
Public Sphere: Law, Media, and Authoritarian Rule in China (
https://www.amazon.com/Contentious-Public-Sphere-Authoritarian-Contemporary/dp/0691166862/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508937819&sr=8-1&keywords=yawen+leiPrinceton
University Press). In my book, I examined how the Chinese state drew on
law, marketized media, and the internet to further an authoritarian project
of modernization, but ended up inadvertently creating a nationwide
contentious public sphere in China. I also analyzed how the Chinese state,
particularly the Xi leadership, has strategically responded to a rising
contentious public sphere in China.
Best,
