Dear all,

Very pleased to announce the publication of my new book The Contentious
Public Sphere: Law, Media, and Authoritarian Rule in China
(

University Press)
. In my book, I examined how the Chinese state drew on
law, marketized media, and the internet to further an authoritarian project
of modernization, but ended up inadvertently creating a nationwide
contentious public sphere in China. I also analyzed how the Chinese state,
particularly the Xi leadership, has strategically responded to a rising
contentious public sphere in China.

Best,
Ya-Wen
