Too much stability, too low a center of gravity, can be a serious instability issue. Michael Kasten, well known naval architect, explains on his web site (http://www.kastenmarine.com/beam_vs_ballast.htm) in a section titled “Roll Moment Of Inertia" why too low a CG leads to instability and sites examples, some of which I have personally experienced during many thousands of miles of ocean races and crossings.
Michael also explains the effects of too low a CG and a wide beam on comfort, which I thoroughly understand with my new boat, a rather wide beam sport fish that has a very unpleasantly fast snap roll in anything other than dead calm. Most of our favorite anchorages from our anti-roll tank equipped trawler days are no longer tenable; the flip side being with a twenty plus knot cruise I can get to calm anchorages pretty quickly.
